(shinrin-yoku - forest bathing)
Niagara Nature and Forest Therapy is inspired by the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, which translates to mean: taking in the forest atmosphere with all of our senses; or popularly known as Forest Bathing. Since the early 1980's, Forest Bathing has been practiced in Japan as a form of preventative medicine by lowering stress and boosting physical and mental health.
A Forest Therapy (Forest Bathing) walk with NNFT is a guided, slow walk in nature where you become restored and reconnected to your own deep sense of belonging -- in nature, with others and to yourself. We use several gentle "invitations" (practices) to facilitate a deepening of this connection to nature through your senses.
A Forest Therapy walk is not physical exercise - there are no goals to be attained - and it is also not a naturalist walk. There are no fitness requirements, as the walk accommodates all ability levels.
A trained guide facilitates a group experience of deepening our sensory intake of nature's healing properties, resulting in renewed energy and boosted mental capacity (see BENEFITS). A guide's role is to ensure that the slowed pace of forest bathing enhances mindful awareness in a natural setting.
